Heart North East is a regional radio station owned and operated by Global as part of the Heart network. It broadcasts to North East England from studios in Newcastle. Century Radio was the first regional station for North East England and also was the first to use the Century brand, which followed a 'personality' format, mixing speech and music. The station was originally called Century Radio, before changing its name to Century FM then reverting to the original name in The station was set up by Border Television , with John Myers as managing director and John Simons as programme director. Myers presented the breakfast show under the pseudonym of John Morgan.

Century Radio was the brand name of a group of independent local radio stations in England. The brand was developed with the launch of Century Radio in North East England in , with John Myers as managing director and John Simons as programme director. Ocean FM used the Century format, but not the brand. When the larger GCap Media acquired the group in , they were forced to sell the Nottingham -based "" station to Chrysalis Group for competition reasons. They were rebranded Real Radio to conform to the branding and network programming of the other stations in the Real Radio network that Myers had developed since in The stations were very successful using their 'radio you just have to sing along to' format, but recent RAJAR figures have shown a decline in market reach and market share.
Regional DAB signals commence shut-down
The station was designed to provide service over digital services in areas where Real was not available in a local form. It replaced a digital-only easy listening service named 'Smooth', which GMG had launched with the MXR multiplexes in ; the relaunch of This move made Century and Real sister operations. Century Digital was removed from DAB in Birmingham and Cardiff, with listeners in these areas advised by the Century Digital website to instead listen to Real on the regional multiplex. Real Radio Digital was also available nationally within the radio section of Sky Digital.
It was formerly part of the Rock Radio group of stations owned by GMG Radio , and whilst initially a separate station, latterly carried programming sourced from When first launched, the digital service was known as Rock Radio North East, and was a dedicated digital-only service for the region which had its own programmes presented locally, broadcast from the complex at the Team Valley that also accommodated the group's regional FM stations Real Radio North East and Breakfast was presented every morning 7am - 12noon by Mark Gregory; John Kirby would present the weekday "drivetime" programme pm ; and Kelly Scott would present evenings from 7pm until 12midnight.
