The myth was first reported in 16th-century Europe and gained prominence in 19th-century Victorian England as a cure for syphilis and gonorrhea among other sexually transmitted diseases. People all over the world have heard this myth, including in sub-Saharan Africa , Asia , Europe and the Americas. An earlier study in by sexual health educators in Gauteng reported that 32 percent of the survey participants believed the myth. According to Betty Makoni of the Girl Child Network in Zimbabwe, the myth is perpetuated by traditional healers advising HIV-positive men to cure their disease by having sex with virgin girls. However, it is unknown exactly how common the myth is and to what degree rapes happen because of the belief in it.

Determinants of knowledge of HIV status in South Africa: results from a population-based HIV survey

South Africa still has four critical gaps to fill before it sees the end of AIDS
The country has the highest number of people afflicted with HIV of any country, and the fourth-highest adult HIV prevalence rate, according to the United Nations statistics. HIV prevalence, instead, indicates that people remain alive, despite the infection. South Africa has the largest HIV treatment programme in the world. A population with a larger proportion of diabetics, means more people are receiving treatment for the condition. Hence, a population with a larger proportion of HIV-positive people, means more people are receiving anti-retroviral treatment. Low national prevalence rates can be misleading, however.

We were alarmed by the complacency toward the rate of new infections at all levels and the absence of an emergency response, especially for young people. This is no time for business as usual from South Africa or its partners, including the U. The epidemic is exacerbated by its concentration in year-olds, those of reproductive and working age who are the backbone of South Africa.
